The Archer's Etiquette PDF Print

The most important thing about archery is safety. For shooting, we use whistle commands. One whistle means you can approach the shooting line and shoot. Only when you have one foot either side of the line you can nock an arrow on the bow and then always keep the bow pointing towards the target face - NEVER EVER point it at anyone. When you've shot all of your arrows (six arrows maximuim), stand back from the line and wait for two whistles, meaning it is now safe to collect your arrows. Remember to always WALK to the target and don't stand behind anyone when they're pulling arrows out. Then return behind the safety line and wait for one whistle to start shooting again.

One final important point, if anyone sees someone cross the shooting line while people are shooting, shout 'FAST'. Anyone shooting please you MUST come down straight away and do not shoot the arrow and wait until all is clear again.

  • do not talk in a loud voice while others are shooting
  • do not talk to another competitor who obviously prefers to be silent
  • do not make any exclamations on the shooting line which may disconcert a neighbour in the act of shooting
  • do not walk off the shooting line while a neighbour is at full draw
  • do not walk along the line and compare scores
  • do not touch anyone else’s archery equipment without permission
  • do not leave litter on the archery ground
  • do not smoke near the shooting or waiting line
  • do not disturb people with loud mobile phone ringtones or speak on the phone on or around the shooting line
  • do not shoot distances beyond our capability, continually missing and holding up shooting
  • when placing foot markers, we take into account other archers shooting on the same target, and allow enough space for them

and when scoring:

  • do not go behind the target to retrieve arrows before the scores have been taken
  • when calling scores, do so in groups of three, and in descending order like this: "X-10-9" pause "9-8-7"

  • while we call out scores, we point to each arrow as it is called, without touching the arrow or target face
  • do not touch any arrow or the target face until all arrow values have been recorded and checked
  • when required to do so, we take turns at scoring
  • we only withdraw the arrows of others if this has been agreed by them at the end of the round
  • we thank the Target Captain for the work done by him/her
